Discover the fundamentals of building science and how buildings function as interconnected systems. This training equips designers, builders, and inspectors with essential knowledge to improve energy efficiency, comfort, durability, and safety in homes.
Part 1 of this class will focus on heat flow basics, diagnostic testing, define what thermal and air barriers are, and review the requirements to install insulation correctly in walls, at soffits, and in vented attics.

Energy Code Testing & Inspections - Field Training

The International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) requires many tests and inspections that must be completed by a builder to confirm that a single family residence (or multifamily building) is performing energy efficiently. This training will demonstrate how these tests and inspections are completed in an actual building by a HERS Rater.

Maximizing Performance with Unvented Attics (Part 1)
November 10 & 12, 2026

Demystifying one of the best ways to build a residential or commercial building, including a user friendly explanation of the international building code requirements for building ducts in conditioned space, with special emphasis on "unvented attics", and what builders, architects, trade contractors and code officials need to focus on to ensure this building method is executed in a durable, safe, and efficient manner.
Part 1 of this class will provide a brief building science overview specific to attics, cover options for putting “Ducts in Conditioned Space,” provide a little history of where “cathedralized unvented” attics came from and explain why people get so excited about "unvented" attics, and lastly, ? objectively review which insulation is “the best” for cathedralized unvented attics.

Part 2 of this class will provide a user friendly overview of what the international building codes have to say about ducts in conditioned space, specifically the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and the International Residential Code (IRC). The class concludes by answering the call to...“Just tell me what I need to do!” by providing a simplified matrix that summarizes the options for complying with the code when building cathedralized unvented attics.
